Tyalgum Rd temporary close

Tyalgum Road will be closed for two weeks in January, while Council replaces failed drainage pipes beneath the road surface.
Council’s Manager Works Ian Kite said the depth of excavations required to safely reach and replace the pipes would make it impossible to keep half of the road open during the works.
“The location, 1.4 kilometres east of the village of Tyalgum, also has a number of environmental constraints which prevent us from diverting traffic around the immediate construction site,” Mr Kite said.
“So we plan to close the road from Monday,  January 9 to Wednesday, January 25 2012 and implement a detour plan taking traffic via Chillingham, connecting to Tyalgum along Zara Road.
Mr Kite said the works were timed to coincide with school holidays to minimise the impact on school bus routes and other road users and to have the road reopened in time for Australia Day celebrations in Tyalgum.
The road doubles as the course for the annual Tyalgum Cup cycle race to be held at Tyalgum on Australia Day. A council spokesman said barring any delays due to bad weather the road would be reopen in time for the race which attracts competitors from throughout South East Queensland and Northern NSW as well as several international riders.
“Extra resources have been allocated to the project so the road can be reopened as quickly as possible,” he said.
“There will continue to be some disruptions to traffic during the remainder of the project, which will reconstruct a 500-metre section of Tyalgum Road and is scheduled to take a total of nine weeks.”
