Residents who fail to register their pets by 10 April could be fined $210.
State Government legislation requires all animals over three months old to be registered with their local council.
“Having pets registered not only saves owners from an expensive fine but is also an effective way to have a pet returned if it goes missing,” Brimbank mayor Natalie Suleyman said.
“Registration fees also go towards helping council provide animal control services such as responding to complaints about dog attacks and wandering or barking dogs, and community education about responsible pet ownership,” she said.
The fee for unsterilised and dangerous dogs is $72, while sterilised and micro-chipped dogs cost $24 to register.
Unsterilised cats cost $30 to register while sterilised cats cost $10.
