DEER Park’s traffic management measures are being put on hold as Brimbank City Council plans to meet local shop owners to discuss ways of improving traffic safety in the area.
The move follows a petition tabled by Deer Park Shopping Centre’s traders and residents calling on the council to revitalise the Ballarat Rd and improve the centre’s rear car park.
An article published by Star earlier this year revealed that Deer Park traders were spending up to 20 minutes a day waiting to get through the busy intersection of Canterbury St and Station Rd.
A recent council report showed traffic in the area was chaotic during peak hours, partially because of growth in Cairnlea, Burnside and Caroline Springs.
Recent traffic investigations, including crash data investigations in the surrounding streets of Canterbury St and Burnside St, have determined there is no justification for installing traffic management measures, the report read.
The car park behind the shopping centre, which is privately owned, is expected to be revitalised which could add to the problem of congestion.
“For the works to be completed there has to be some sort of agreement between the traders and the residents, that’s why we’re having a public meeting,” Grasslands Ward councillor Ken Capar said.
