A FAMILY of seven was lucky to escape uninjured from their Sunshine West home when a fire broke out in the kitchen.
The fire started when cooking oil caught on fire on the stove early Tuesday morning last week.
The Tallintyre Rd home was located above a fish and chips shop.
The shop’s owner, Lin Hua, said she was terrified when she heard about the blaze, thinking it could have been caused by the shop’s deep fryers.
A mother of six had to climb out of an upstairs window and down a ladder to escape the blaze.
IGA Supermarket worker Angela Spataro said she had noticed the cries of the children when she was walking around the corner on her way to work.
She called the fire brigade.
She said she was hoping that it was not another incident similar to one last year when nine-year-old Brendan Rushin, who lived only metres away from the house, died when he was trapped inside his family’s burning house.
The woman who fled the fire and her children, aged between three and 15, were treated at Sunshine Hospital for smoke inhalation.
