Boy injured in explosion

A boy has been injured after detonating an explosive device in the bedroom of his home at Uralla.
About 4pm, Wednesday November 16, 2011, a 12-year-old boy was at his family home in Roman Avenue when he set off a detonation device.
As a result of the explosion the boy sustained shrapnel wounds to his hands, chest, stomach, neck and shoulder.
The boy was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to Tamworth Base Hospital for treatment.
He has since been airlifted to the John Hunter Hospital for specialist treatment of injuries to his hands.
Police commenced investigations into the matter to establish where the boy obtained the detonator.
Detectives from Armidale and officers from Uralla later attended another house in Roman Avenue where they spoke with a 50-year-old man.
At the premises police seized eight firearms and suspended the man’s firearms licence.
He will be issued a court attendance notice for the offence of handle precursor/explosive without authorising licence.
