Bike ride to raise funds for Children’s Hospital

Lifecyclists is a group of Armidale mountain bikers who are set to embark on a ride from Sydney to Armidale to raise money for Sydney Children’s Hospital.
Damian and Rebecca Wood, Jim Lea and John Hiscox will leave Sydney Children’s Hospital on Saturday, September 29 and arrive at the Armidale Bowling Club for a reception and charity auction on Friday, October 5.
The Wood’s late daughter Tessa is the inspiration for the ride.
Tessa spent nine months in the hospital receiving treatment for leukemia in 2009, but died after developing a rare complication. She was just 19 months old.
Three cyclists participated in the inaugural Lifecyclists ride in 2010, which raised $52,000 for Sydney Children’s Hospital, which helps so many regional-based children from all over NSW.
“This year we have eight people riding, including my wife Rebecca,” Mr Wood said.
“Jim and John have also lent their support to the cause, as have two Sydney-based riders — Rob and Rolfe Kolbe — who came on the first ride with me, as well as Paul Mackie and Walter van Hilst who hail from Taree.”
Mr Wood said the group would cover around 700km on their way to Armidale, seeking donations in the towns they pass through on the way.
“There will be a function at the Bowling Club when we arrive back in Armidale, including an auction, so hopefully that will help add to the overall tally we raise for the Children’s Hospital,” he said. “The bands Tex Message and the F & Cs will also play on the night and there will be raffles and lucky door prizes and kids are welcome.
“We’ve had great support once again from local businesses and individuals, especially New England Mutual and The Professionals, who have made generous donations, while many others have donated goods for the auction.
People wanting to sponsor Lifecyclists or make a donation can either visit the website www.lifecyclists.com or make a deposit into the Lifecyclists account at New England Mutual.
Anyone able to donate goods or services for auction at the reception can do so by contacting Rebecca on 6772 6925 or lifecyclists@gmail.com.
