SOCCER enthusiasts will help to kick start Refugee Week celebrations tomorrow in a series of soccer matches.
The Voices of Youth Refugee Week Soccer Match will see a big line up of soccer players of all talent levels at the RecWest Community Centre in Braybrook.
Girls will take on girls and boys will take on boys in the first matches of the day but the spectacle will begin at 11.10am when mums take on the female workers at RecWest.
Dads will then be pulling on the boots from 11.35am for their match against the male workers at RecWest, and following all the excitement there will be an all in match after lunch.
The Maribyrnong Refugee Week committee said if soccer wasn’t your sport they had more activities scheduled to help celebrate Refugee Week to ensure everyone could be involved.
The committee has also organised an action packed day called Exchange of Youth Voices at the RecWest Community Centre.
Residents have been encouraged to sample fun workshops from around the world and enjoy interactive performances.
Registration for the activities will be held from 9.30am before a series of hip hop, breakdancing and Aboriginal dancing performances to celebrate the diversity of dance.
Maribyrnong City Council mayor Michael Clarke will be involved with the activities and has extended an invitation for residents to celebrate the diversity of the city.
“Come along to the events we have in store to celebrate our residents from a refugee background — this great city wouldn’t be what it is today without them.
“Maribyrnong is among the most culturally diverse municipalities in Victoria,” he said.
Two series of workshops will be held in the morning and will include hip hop, song, African drumming, Haka dancing, origami, circus, belly dancing and Macedonian dancing.
Police representatives, the street surfer and the police band will also be involved in the celebration.
All events will be held at the RecWest Community Centre on the corner of Lily and Duke St in Braybrook this Wednesday.
