Bay in not so good bloom

By Vanessa Chircop
HOBSONS Bay beachgoers can breathe a sigh of relief with fears of an algal bloom being laid to rest.
Samples were taken from the suspected blooms last week and tested by an independent laboratory. The results have not found any harmful substances.
The suspected algal bloom has now dissipated and brown discoloured water can no longer be seen. It is thought the rough weather earlier last week broke the suspected bloom up.
The concern for people swimming in the bay has now been lifted, but swimmers are still being urged by the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) to avoid contact with water that looks murky or sludgy. Direct contact with algae affected water can cause skin irritations and respiratory or hay fever-like symptoms.
