THE scouting movement has reached the end of an era with the departure of scout district commissioner Bob Terry after a decade of service.
Mr Terry retired from the post after 12 years as District Commissioner of Scouts “Kariwara” District covering the Hobsons Bay and Maribyrnong areas.
Mr Terry successfully headed the scout district of nearly 400 members after he moved from Sydney where he spent nearly eight years as a scout leader.
During his 12 years Mr Terry was also group leader at the 1st Altona scout group.
Mr Terry said he would miss working with the kids that come through scouting and the friendship of other leaders.
“The reward is seeing the kids start that process and seeing them many years later come through scouting and their young responsible adults, often then go on to very good careers,” Mr Terry said.
Mr Terry’s was involvement in scouts for 22 years and said he was leaving at a time when interest was increasing.
“It’s very important we talk not only about the experience in scouting but make it a family thing so we’re talking and involving the parents.”
John Wightwick has been appointed as the new District Commissioner.
Mr Wightwick has volunteered for 23 years as a group leader at 2nd Footscray Scout Group.
He said he would continue to carry on Mr Terry’s great work and hoped to encourage more people into the scouting movement.
“The opportunities are limitless as to what youth and adults can participate in,” Mr Wightwick said.
