A program that aims to connect two generations of young and old is seeking volunteers to donate their time for a beneficial cause.
Timehelp connects two generations for education and well-being benefits.
The program sources, trains and matches over-55s who volunteer their time to projects of need in primary and secondary schools across Hobsons Bay.
Laverton resident Kay Webster has been giving her time weekly for four years at Laverton P-12 College.
“I truly enjoy the diversity within the learning environment and doing what I love which is assisting the next generation to develop their highest potential,” Ms Webster said.
Ms Webster said she went to a morning tea information session and immediately loved the idea and has been doing it ever since.
“The Timehelp co-ordinators are most caring and supportive and they also arrange, on a regular basis, for guest speakers at our delightful morning teas so as to keep us up to date with the latest educational methods and strategies.”
This year Timehelp aims to improve the literacy levels of young people in Hobsons Bay who speak English as a second language.
“Over the years I have worked individually one on one or classroom in groups of students who might need understanding or support.”
Ms Webster is currently working with one to one literacy support of four different students across Years 5 to 8.
“Most of all, I love seeing the wonderful growth and self-improvement of the students, both in their learning skills and behaviour and attitude. It is a joy to behold.”
“Because of the demand for help in the schools it was a good way to use older generation, those that feel they have more to give use their time and be of benefit with the community.”
With a background in performing arts, Ms Webster was asked to start a dance and performance lunch class at the school.
Ms Webster encouraged others to volunteer.
“Being a Timehelp volunteer keeps me active in mind and body and expands my own awareness of the educational and sociological systems within our communities.”
“Enjoy a new lease on life as a Timehelp volunteer, which is a most rewarding and uplifting way of utilising your time and wisdom gained through your own skills and life experiences.”
TimeHelp is active across 10 schools across the region and ask for a volunteer commitment of two hours a week and a desire to help students.
