PORT Macquarie woman Myra Benson celebrated her 100th birthday in style yesterday with family and friends.
Born in 1914 at home in Abercrombi Street, Redfern, Myra married the butcher’s son in Bexley and had two children, Lorraine and Gordon, and today has four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
She has seen some momentous milestones, including two world wars and the Great Depression.
Her daughter Lorraine said during the World War II she made bread dough jewellery to help supplement the family income.
“She learned several kinds of dancing as a child and kept dancing well into her 1980s,” Lorraine said.
“Her memory is still as sharp as a tack and is able to relate great stories about the different inventions in her lifetime, including the time she saw her first plane fly over.
“Myra is also an experienced traveller and has done more than 50 cruises – including a cruise last year – and plans to do more.”
After living in the suburbs of Sydney all her life, Myra and Lorraine moved to Port Macquarie four years ago.
Her family travelled from all over to be with her yesterday for the birthday celebrations, which included a lunch at the Port Pacific Resort and dinner at Port City Bowling Club.
