Riding to fight cancer

IF YOU love a good hard bike ride and also like helping a good cause, an event being held later this month might be just the ticket.
Wauchope’s Bago Vineyard is the venue for this year’s exciting Do It For Cancer Six Hour Mountain Bike Enduro, which will be held on Sunday, July 20, from 9am to 3pm.
An energetic group of members from the Hastings Valley Mountain Bike Riders Club have put their noses to the grindstone to help build this fantastic purpose-built bike track, making up an eight-kilometre loop of fun flowing trails through the beautiful bush and vineyard venue.
Jamie Vogele, who has been actively involved with the HVMBR Club for 13 years, brought the Enduro to fruition in 2013 along with the partnership of Cancer Council NSW, Rotary Club of Port Macquarie Sunrise and the Hastings Valley Mountain Bike Club.
“I wanted to raise money for cancer research after many of my friends and family members had passed away from cancer,” Jamie said.
“And following a chat with cycling legend Jack Griffin, OAM, before he passed away from cancer, Jack directed me to approach Sunrise Rotary, who had helped Jack organise his many charity rides.”
Club member Jason Dragos designed the purpose-built bike track to international standards.
Jason approached the owner of the Bago Vineyards last year, who agreed to the eco-friendly sport which helps keep school kids active and fits perfectly with Cancer Council’s pursuit of healthy eating and living in the prevention of cancer. In fact, the students of Wauchope High School assisted with the track’s construction.
Mayor Peter Besseling has once again enthusiastically agreed to not only officially open the event, but to present certificates to the winners.
Organisers are hoping to raise $10,000 and surpass last year’s $7000. The money will go to Cancer Council NSW cancer research, information and support services, cancer prevention programs and cancer advocacy initiatives.
Riders are encouraged to raise funds prior to and on the day of the event and as an incentive when amounts reach $300 participants will have all but $10 of their $60 entry fee refunded.
