Human interaction in dance

Dancers from '2 One Another' in action.

THE Sydney Dance Company is bringing their internationally acclaimed ‘2 One Another’ work to the Glasshouse in Port Macquarie.
This exuberant, high-octane fusion of dance, language, sound and light from artistic director Rafael Bonachela weaves a vivid, exultant and sensual study of human interaction – charting the myriad actions and reactions, gestures and relationships, connections and disconnections that make up a life.
The piece thrums with a driving, baroque-meets-electronica soundtrack. This is dance at its most engaging and multi-dimensional, featuring some of the best dancers in the country.
The Age reviewer described 2 One Another as a show “not to be missed”.
The Sydney Dance Company is a giant of the Australian dance scene and is now celebrating its 45th year, having performed on the great dance stages of the world, from Sydney to New York, Shanghai to Moscow.
It has is origins in a group founded way back in 1969 by renowned dancer Suzanne Musitz.
Artistic director Rafael Bonachela was born in Barcelona, where he began his early dance training before moving to London, and in 1992 joined the legendary Rambert Dance Company. He remained with Rambert as a dancer and associate choreographer until 2006 when he set up Bonachela Dance Company to concentrate on the rapid rise of his choreographic career.
As a choreographer, Rafael has been commissioned to make works for Candoco, George Piper Dances, ITDANSA Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Transitions Dance Company and Dance Works Rotterdam among others.
In 2008, Rafael premiered his first full-length production, 360°, for Sydney Dance Company and less than six months later, he was appointed artistic director.
His internationally recognised talent has seen him work not only with contemporary dance at the highest level but also with artists from popular culture, such as Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Sarah Blasko and Katie Noonan as well as leading fashion designers Dion Lee and Toni Maticevski.
Utilising all 16 company dancers, 2 One Another takes the idea of interaction, and relating to one another and conveys a wide range of emotions and experiences that can occur when different individuals and groups connect. From the moment that we enter this world we are shaped by our experiences, our interactions and our relationships with the people we meet.
Rafael draws on his intimate relationship with the company dancers, having worked with some of them for over three years now. Together they closely examine the complexities of human relationships, as an individual, a couple and within a group.
The underlying concept here is human relationships in the broadest sense.
The Sydney Dance Company will be performing 2 One Another at the Glasshouse on Thursday 31 July and Friday 1 August, both at 8pm.
Tickets cost $59.90 for adults, $55.90 concession or group of six or more, and $45.90 for those aged under 21 or students.
