MELTON local government area’s unemployment rate has remained steady in the last five years according to the latest ABS figures released.
Last year’s Census data showed 3,272 people were unemployed in August last year – totalling six per cent of the area’s 109,259 residents. In 2006 the unemployment rate was 5.9 per cent.
This was slightly higher than the national average of 5.6 per cent.
However, neighbouring municipality Brimbank’s jobless rate was significantly higher at 8.3 per cent.
Of those employed 16.9 per cent worked within the clerical and administrative sector, while 16.1 per cent were technicians and trade workers and 14.1 per cent professionals.
The median weekly income was $610, with a total household income of $1,363.
The Census also showed a couple with children was still the most common family composition with over half the population living within this structure. Single parent families made up 16.7 per cent of the population.
