AN 11-year-old from Hoppers Crossing has netted an exciting chance to play basketball overseas.
Beau Koscak, who also plays with the Werribee Devils, has been selected by Australian Basketball Digest (AUBD) to join their Tour Singapore Squad during September.
The tour aims to give the young participants “the experience and exposure required for progression into a professional basketball career” and Beau’s family are attempting to raise $3500 in donations or sponsorship for his trip.
In addition to playing for the Devils, Beau trains twice a week at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.
His coaches include ex-Lakers player Sedale Threat Senior, and his son, a member of the Sandringham Sabres in the state’s Big V Basketball League.
“I reckon my favourite thing about basketball is scoring, just the thrill of winning a game, and adrenaline going through you,” Beau said.
“When you have adrenaline pumping you through the game, you just can’t stop it.”
The talented youngster, who at 160 centimetres in height is one of the tallest pupils in his class at Heathdale Christian College, is also being mentored by Darryl McDonald, who played for the Melbourne Tigers.
Beau said his favourite basketball players included Ray Allen from the Boston Celtics and Michael Jordan.
“I’d really love to be a professional basketballer and to play for the team I love, the Boston Celtics. It would be great for my career,” Beau said.
Werribee Devils coach Brant Lowry said Beau’s “athleticism and fitness is second to none”.
“Beau has developed his individual skills to a point that would match or better players five years older than he is and the potential that he shows as an athlete and basketball player is incredible,” Mr Lowry said.
