Council offers artist a fishy commission

A GIANT fish is set to adorn The Warmies in Newport, after Hobsons Bay City Council announced it had offered a local artist $27,000 to create a massive sculpture.
Anuradha Patel was awarded the commission to create a giant steel fish at the popular fishing spot.
Hobsons Bay mayor Bill Baarini said the artwork, called Whirlpool, would add vibrancy to the section of the Bay Trail.
“Whirlpool captures the essence of The Warmies, symbolising the warmer water and the fish in the area,” Cr Baarini said.
“The structure will be made of steel and will feature a large fish, the perfect marker for one of Hobsons Bay’s most popular fishing precincts.”
The council hoped it would enhance Hobsons Bay’s reputation as a growing cultural and artistic hub.
“It will contribute to the city’s tourism industry by encouraging visitation and it will also promote a vibrant community,” he said.
The artwork will join other works, including Requiem for a Champion, Seaborn and Time Beacon that have been installed over the past four years.
“The Bay Trail public art program has been a wonderful initiative in contributing to the heritage and style of the city, supporting and expressing cultural life and community aspirations, and promoting Hobsons Bay as a creative place,” Cr Baarini said.
Whirlpool will be installed by the end of June.
