Footpath green light

A GROUP Taylors Hill residents concerns over a new footpath were not eased after their petition was overturned at last week’s council meeting.

The petition, signed by 10 residents, called on Melton City Council to reconsider its intention to construct a footpath on Hume Drive.

The residents were calling on council to reconsider the footpaths placement along the boundary line of fences, instead placing it one to two metres away from the existing properties’ back fence.

Cr Lara Carli supported the petition and made an amendment calling for the footpath to be constructed even further from the fence line so as not to disturb or remove any vegetation in the area.

Cr Carli said presently residents were being forced to deal with various safety issues, with at least one resident forced to clean her backyard every morning after rubbish was dumped by pedestrians.

However, a report suggested that the council proceed with its original plan to construct the footpath at the fence line. The council also took into consideration that the footpath may have to be demolished then rebuilt as part of the duplication of Gourlay Rd.

Meanwhile, a second petition was received and noted at last week’s meeting.

The petition requested that Santolin Drive in Hillside be closed and changed into two courts to address concerns of hoon behaviour.

A council report revealed speeding investigation results show the average speed is below the speed limit of 50km per hour and the traffic volumes in the area are very low.

The council voted to retain the current road network and encourage residents to call the hoon hotline in cases of speeding motorists.
