Sport speaks all languages

THE Werribee Football Club will receive $50,000 to support the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project.
The funding is set to ensure young migrants have the opportunity to participate in sport, make new friends and develop a sense of belonging in their new community.
Making the announcement in Werribee, Minister for Multicultural Affairs Senator Kate Lundy said, “Sport is a powerful unifier that brings together people from diverse backgrounds and Australia is a successful multicultural nation because of great initiatives like the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project.”
Funded through the Australian Government’s Diversity and Social Cohesion Program (DSCP), the Wyndham Sporting Opportunities Project will work in partnership with the Centre for Multicultural Youth and will bring together young migrants and sporting clubs.
“The DSCP aims to strengthen social cohesion in the Australian community with a strong emphasis on addressing racial intolerance,” Ms Lundy said.
“This year a range of innovative projects are being funded which will make a real difference to the lives of many people from different cultural backgrounds.”
Projects will range from sporting activities to arts and cultural performances and workshops, with grants funded in every state and territory. Some of the successful applicant organisations include migrant resource centres, multicultural service agencies, educational institutions, community groups and welfare organisations.
