When life throws a curve

ARTIST Leonie Kervin is ready to step out from behind her teaching role and reveal a bright and bold exhibition and she can’t wait to share it with the public.
For the past five years the Yarraville resident has taught life-drawing classes in Newport, Laverton and Brunswick.
Since that time she has educated her students about the intricacies of capturing the human body on canvas.
Ms Kervin is exhibiting her work as part of the Hobsons Bay City Council initiative ‘Art in Public Places’ in a solo exhibition.
The event connects the community with local artists by matchmaking an artist with a public space.
Ms Kervin studied fine art at university in the ’80s and can easily go from one medium including painting, screen printing and home wares making – but life-drawing is her passion.
“I use anything I don’t restrict myself with mediums. I draw a lot with charcoals and pastels and mainly do oil paintings,” Ms Kervin.
The first solo exhibition by the artist for some time is entitled “Bemused” and will be on display at the Muse Hair Gallery in Williamstown.
“I love that it’s bringing art to the public. A lot of people might not go to an art gallery but while they’re sitting in a hair dresser or a cafe they will see work by local artists.”
Taking inspiration from her life drawings the exhibition will feature nine large and colourful oil paintings that are intended to shock, dazzle and awe.
“I’ve gone with a theatrical scene, nine colourful burlesque pieces.”
“It’s one of those things when I’m painting and looking for inspiration through drawing I pull out the ones that visually appeal to me.”
The exhibition will open from Sunday 7 April at the Muse Hair Galler, 76 Douglas Parade, Williamstown.
