Ollie your way to Beachside Skate

Former Australian skateboarding professional Sid Tapia will be the special guest at this year’s Beachside Skate competition at Cabarita Skate Park on Saturday, May 14.
This is the sixth annual skate comp organised by the Beachside Church, which last year attracted around 100 entrants from across the Tweed, the Gold Coast, Lismore and Ballina.
Organiser Pedro De Jesus said organisers were excited Sid Tapia was on board for the event to share his experiences with fellow riders.
“Sid has been very supportive of the event over recent years and loves coming up to the Tweed area – I have no doubt the competitors will have so much to learn from Sid,” Mr De Jesus said.
“I encourage each competitor to take time out to talk with Sid about his experiences and draw from his wealth of experience.”
Council’s Youth Development Officer Sylvia Roylance said Council was proud to sponsor the annual event through funding and in-kind support.
“The alcohol-free and drug-free event attracts all ages, from Under 12 through to the Open division, and the entry fee is affordable at just $10,” Ms Roylance said.
“It’s great to see the enjoyment the young people get from performing in front of a crowd and showing their skills, as well as watching and supporting each other,” Ms Roylance said.
Sign-on is from 9am to 11am on the day, with sign-on for the Under 12s at 11am. Under 18s are required to have a legal guardian’s consent at enrolment.
Mr De Jesus said organisers were grateful to all their wonderful sponsors.
“Special mention must be made of Tweed Shire Council who, over the years, has been the anchor sponsor,” Mr De Jesus said.
“It is tremendous seeing the Council play such a valuable role in this much-loved local event. We simply could not do it without all the work from the many volunteers and sponsors,” he said.
“I have no doubt we are going to have great fun on the day, with live music, DJ, prizes, freebies for competitors, great skateboarding and lots to eat.”
