Tweed Heads and Coolangatta Bowls Clubs will celebrate their combined 90th anniversaries this week.
Originally both clubs were one and known as the Tweed Heads Coolangatta Bowls Club.
The original club was founded on the banks of the Tweed River in Coral Street, Tweed Heads on May 12 1921 by a group of civic minded, sports loving citizens.
Turning 90 is no small achievement; there have been plenty of celebrations this week.
Yesterday VIPs, THBC staff and a number of randomly selected THBC social and bowling members attended a cocktail party on Level One at Tweed Club from 5pm.
Today, Thursday, the festivities step up a notch with both Clubs coming together for a special bowls day which begins at 1pm and will be followed by a high tea served from 4pm.
Bowling members from both Clubs will enjoy a fun-filled day of competition and then retire to the THBC Clubhouse where the celebrations begin.
Long serving members from both Clubs will be invited to speak and talk about the significant contribution that both clubs have made to our community over the 90 years.
Invited guests include both the Gold Coast and Tweed Shire Mayors as well a local members.
THBC Chairman Peter Howell said the 90th was a significant event for the club’s members, guests and staff.
“This club has served an important role in the life of the Tweed Heads community, bringing people together for sport, socialising and entertainment, so we’re hoping to see plenty of people here on the day ready to celebrate,” Mr Howell said.
Every year since 1949, members from Coolangatta and THBC have played for a commemorative shield, which signifies the fact that the two clubs were once one.
The commemorative shield will be on display during the Bowls Day, along with memorabilia from both THBC and Coolangatta clubs.
