The NSW Parliament has legislated mandatory life sentences for people convicted of murdering a police officer and Tweed Nationals MP Geoff Provest, who voted for the law, says he welcomes it.
“I am a big supporter of Tweed cops. I have been out on night shifts with them, I know how hard they work and the risks they have to take to make the Tweed a safer place to live, work and play,” Mr Provest said.
“That is why they deserve this extra protection, which I believe has the overwhelming support of the Tweed community.
“This has been Liberal and Nationals policy since 2002 and we are delivering on it because, tragically, 12 officers have been slain in the course of their duties over the past 40 years.
“As Premier Barry O’Farrell said, it is unacceptable that anyone involved in the murder of a police officer should now be enjoying freedom,” Mr Provest concluded.
