Doris Day comes to Kingscliff

She has long been a golden girl of musicals and now a new generation is discovering Doris Day, thanks to people like country music star Melinda Schneider who has recently released an album of classic Doris Day tracks.
However, while Belinda’s tribute has introduced the next generation to the music of Doris Day, there’s  nothing like the original.
That’s just what Stephen and Deborah Burge at Cinemax Arthouse Cinema, Kingscliff will be presenting with this month’s classic musical mornings.
This Friday and Saturday mornings, Cinemax will screen Love Me Or Leave Me, a Doris Day classic – with the added bonus of a killer performance of the legendary James Cagney.
If you’re unfamiliar, Love Me Or Leave Me is the story of torch singer Ruth Etting’s rise from 1920s taxi dancer to movie star, simultaneously aided and frustrated by Chicago mobster Marty Sydney’s headstrong ways and pressure tactics.
Ruth Etting had looks, ambition and a haunting, smoke-tinged voice but it took more than that to make her a star – it took Marty ‘The Gimp’ Snyder, the limping, evil-tempered Chicago hood to propel Ruth from dingy dance halls to Broadway fame … but turned her offstage life into a nightmare of violence and fear.
