Casuarina have come from behind to capture this year’s JH Williams Premier League Women’s Hockey title at Murwillumbah’s Barrie Smith Hockey Field last weekend.
The Tweed Coast team, down 1-0 at half-time, fought back to win the title over Mullumbimby, 3-1.
The Mullumbimby started well but Casuarina always looked menacing and had secured two penalty corners by the three minute mark – but were unable to convert.
Mullumbimby dominated Casuarina’s defence and showed them it wasn’t going to be a walk in the park – something that became even more obvious when Mullum scored in the seventeenth minute.
The goal was scored by Danielle Rodda, after good lead-up play from Shari East off a long corner to Sam Johnston.
Mullum again started strongly and were awarded a penalty stroke just 10 minutes in when Karen Iwanuscha intercepted a cross ball which resulted in a one on one with the keeper but an infringement by a Casuarina defender rewarded Mullumbimby with the stroke.
But the goal stung the seasiders into action and a procession of goals followed with Deb Dolan and Brooke and Savannah Fitzpatrick all finding the back of the net to give Casuarina a 3-1 victory.
In the other final Glee defeated East Lismore 4-1.
