The NSW public library network has welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Julia Gillard of $1.3 million in funding for the National Year of Reading 2012.
“This significant project has been developed through the initiative of public and State libraries across Australia,” said Graham Smith, Chairman of Public Libraries NSW.
“The PM’s announcement provides impetus to its implementation, and to highlight the importance of reading in all walks of life and in all stages of development.”
It has been warmly welcomed here on the Tweed, according to Richmond Tweed Regional Library Acting Manager Jo Carmody.
“We are in the process of setting up a Richmond Tweed Regional Library working committee which will investigate funding opportunities and partnerships to create a rolling calendar of events for the year.
“This funding provides the opportunity to contribute to the success of the National Year of Reading 2012 in this region,” she said.
“It also signals support from Government by acknowledging the importance of reading and literacy in 2011.”
The funding will support the One Country Reading and workplace literacy initiatives – two of the four key national programs for the National Year of Reading.
The project has attracted significant commercial and philanthropic partnerships, including a grant from the Sidney Myer Foundation.
Other funding opportunities are being pursued for the two remaining national programs – The Reading Hour and a public library membership drive.
Commenting on the PM’s announcement, Minister for the Arts Simon Crean said the National Year of Reading is an excellent initiative to highlight the importance of reading as a life skill and a source of enjoyment.
“I commend libraries and library associations, including the Australian Library and Information Association, for working to inspire a love of reading in Australians.
“The benefits of improved literacy are significant for the community and workplace productivity,” Mr Crean said.
Library users in New South Wales will be able to participate in the National Year of Reading through the 374 public library branches, as well as through many school and community organisations.
Not only will the national programs be available, but specific local and regional activities are already in development.
