Renowned watercolourist John Caldwell will be presenting a two-day workshop in painting and drawing to coincide with his current exhibition with James Rogers that opened in August at the New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM). The workshop will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 17 and 18 from 9am to 5pm at NERAM, with lunch provided.
All levels of experience are provided for, with the landscape being the main subject matter demonstrated, but still life and figurative work will also be covered. The procedures will follow Caldwell’s own arts practice including a sketching component leading to additional drawing in the studio for those who wish to focus on drawing.
The primary focus of Caldwell’s work is the natural landscape where there is little or no evidence of human presence. Through regular working trips in Australia and overseas, he gathers the reference material that results in his finished studio work. Major solo exhibitions have resulted from time spent in Antarctica, the Ipswich coalfields, the granite country of northern New South Wales and the Southern Ocean coastline of Western Australia.
His paintings, drawings and printmaking also encompass portraiture, figurative and still life subjects and he conducts a programme of painting and drawing workshops from his base in Blackheath. A regular contributor to major art competitions, Caldwell has won many awards and been shortlisted in the Archibald Prize on three occasions.
John Caldwell’s works are held in most state and regional collections in Australia, including the National Gallery and many private collections. He has won numerous awards including the Art Gallery of NSW Trustees’ Watercolour Prize in 1984 and 1987. He is recognised as one of Australia’s leading watercolour artists and continues to exhibit widely.
