Armidale theatre lovers are in for another treat at the Belgrave Cinema, with the second production from the National Theatre’s current season in London to be screened at the weekend.
This time it is Arnold Wesker’s classic black comedy The Kitchen, set in the behind the scenes chaos of a West End restaurant kitchen.
The play premiered at the Royal Court in London in 1959 and was an instant success. Its universal theme struck a chord and has been continuously performed in more than 30 countries since then.
Thrown together by their work, chefs, waitresses and porters from across Europe – English, Irish, German, Jewish – argue and flirt as they race to keep up.
Peter, a high spirited young cook, thrives on the pressure and in between preparing dishes, he manages to strike up an affair with a married waitress. However, the chaos of the kitchen becomes the dictator of events.
Local theatre aficionados have welcomed the introduction of the National Theatre High Definition cinema productions at the Belgrave.
“London is still the home of truly great theatre and it’s great for us to have the opportunity to be part of it,” says TAS Hoskins Theatre Manager Emma Buzo.
“A play like The Kitchen requires pinpoint acting and directing and, with the National Theatre, we can be assured it will be a first class production.”
