The matter of Cecil Paul Briggs, the Urunga man charged in relation to the brutal bashing murder of Douglas James Bindley on Christmas Eve, 2012, was dealt with in Armidale Local Court last Wednesday. Solicitor from local law firm Rice, More and Gibson, Frank Falcomata, is representing the accused, as an agent for the Legal Aid Commission.
Mr Falcomata said that the DPP (Director of Public Prosecutions) was last Wednesday ordered by Magistrate Stafford to supply its brief of evidence by March 13.
He said that his client is to reappear in Armidale Local Court on March 20 and confirmed that bail had not been applied for.
The 47-year-old victim was allegedly bashed in his flat in Brown Street, Armidale on Christmas Eve, with Briggs allegedly using a chair leg and baseball bat in an attack that Police described as “vicious”. Douglas Bindley died on the night of Wednesday, December 26, 2012, in Armidale Hospital, as a result of injuries allegedly sustained during the attack.
Mr Briggs was initially charged in relation to the attack and released on bail, then re-arrested and charged with murder following Mr Bindley’s passing.
In addition to the murder charge, Briggs is charged with reckless wounding, use offensive weapon and malicious damage.
