SONGS by Samuel Barber, Kurt Weil, Carlisle Floyd and Bernard Hermann will feature in the next Music on a Market Sunday concert at 12.30pm on 29 September in the Armidale Uniting Church grounds.
Inge Southcott, Kylie Constantine and Lisa Quast will be accompanied by Robyn Bradley in a program of songs that deserve to be better known than they are.
American art music tends to get overshadowed by music for musicals and film, though often the same composers, for instance Bernard Hermann, straddled different genres.
In other cases, like Samuel Barber, the success of a single work overshadows an incredibly rich range of pieces – some of which will be sung on Sunday.
Visitors will also hear two arias from the second most popular opera performed in the United States, Carlisle Floyd’s Susannah.
This is a great opportunity to hear some of Armidale’s best singers in some little known but exquisite repertoire.
Admission to the concert is free, though donations are encouraged. Tea and sausages are available at the Uniting Church before the concert.
