Friends in deed

FRIENDS of the Armidale Dumaresq Library (FOADL) is a voluntary group of people who work together to advance the interests and needs of our Armidale Dumaresq Memorial Library.
The objects of the Friends group are to provide a variety of activities for people interested in books and libraries; to enhance the facilities, services and resources of the Armidale public library; and to generally promote and support the library in the community.
In pursuit of these objects, the Friends have supported the design and construction of a new library.
The committee, particularly, over the past decade, has worked hard writing letters, informing the community and promoting the concept to the council. The council’s recent successful submission of a development application for the new library was welcome news to the Friends.
FOADL also supports the Civic Precinct committee in its efforts to secure a new library as the first stage of the long-term precinct proposal. There are FOADL representatives contributing to discussion and action on the precinct committee.
Within the library, the Friends work closely with library staff, raising funds with raffles, film and quiz nights – all fun. These funds are then allocated as the library sees fit, including the purchase of books and furnishings.
One favourite project which FOADL has fully funded for the last three years is the Baby Book Pack – every newborn baby in the local area receives a library bag containing a picture board book, a book of rhymes with an accompanying CD for parents to sing to their babies, and information about the library and its services and the benefits of early reading to children.
Armidale Dumaresq Council War Memorial Library, a vibrant, generous public space for the whole community, is at 122 Faulkner Street, Armidale.
