Assist can help out

THE Armidale branch of the National Servicemen Association has done its bit to help make the lives of cancer sufferers and their families a little bit easier.
On Remembrance Day, president Harold Heffernan gave cheques to the Armidale and Guyra branches of Can Assist.
They met at the Armidale City Bowling Club, another organisation that raised more than $12,000 for local cancer patients at its annual Kids with Cancer charity event on Sunday.
Guyra Can Assist president Bill Wicks said the group was most appreciative of the support.
“Since our last monthly meeting, we’ve had five individual applications from people looking for support,” he said.
“We’re not a big group and we don’t have a lot of income, so all donations like this are really appreciated.”
Mr Wicks said Guyra Can Assist tried to help cancer sufferers cope with the stress of modern life, so they could concentrate on their recovery.
“A lot of the support we give is based around helping them pay their bills,” he said.
