NEWS for parents and children – they’re reading!
This is part observational and part personal experience. I’ve discovered a truly amazing thing actually does happen when you read to kids.
Among many life-enhancing qualities, what stands out is that they naturally “get it” when it comes time for school and learning to read.
Some simple yet effective practices for instilling a love of books and reading are;
– Reading to them as little as 10-15 minutes a day, every day.
– Surround them with books, the more the better.
– Let them choose the subject or type of book they are interested in. (Yes, even if it is Captain Underpants!).
The library is an invaluable resource for creating or maintaining an interest in books.
Using the library also helps kids get used to being around books, becoming familiar things rather than something foreign.
Staff members of the library welcome all children. We invite you to browse our extensive collection and would like kids to know they can borrow up to 30 items at a time!
And it’s all free. So immerse yourself today.
News for the gentle reader
OUR featured author this week is Rebecca Shaw. As a retired school teacher living in a Dorset village, Rebecca Shaw has been inspired to write about rural and village life.
After retiring from teaching hearing-impaired children, Rebecca Shaw turned to writing when her youngest child left home. Her books belong to the genre of “gentle” reads and are often described as “cozys” because of the soothing affect they have on the reader.
At the same time these books are cheerful, hopeful stories that explore the lives of interesting characters. For gossip, scandal and secrets there’s nothing better than curling up with a Rebecca Shaw novel.
Her two best-selling series centre round the old English villages of Turnham Malpas and Barleybridge.
If you are interested in these feel-good books with satisfying conclusions, the Armidale Dumaresq Council War Memorial Library holds 12 titles in the Turnham Malpas series, six titles in the Barleybridge series, as well as six Talking Book titles.
If “gentle” reads interest you, other authors you might consider are Debbie Macomber, Alexander McCall Smith, Miss Read, Jennifer Chiaverini, and even Adriana Trigiani for a more robust experience.
