Tax relief bid

NEW ENGLAND-based Senator John Williams is going in to bat for overseas volunteers.
The Nationals Senator said he had approached the Australian Tax Office to see if it was feasible to offer some form of tax relief for people who undertake voluntary work overseas at their own expense.
It came to his attention when a team of Rotary volunteers had flown to Kokoda in New Guinea to begin work on a hospital AIDS clinic and also carried out maintenance on other buildings.
The Rotarians paid for their own flights, accommodation and food over a two-week period.
The ATO said it would investigate the points raised.
