Triples bonanza

New England Bowls By RICHIE CLUTTERBUCK

ANOTHER very successful Guyra carnival concluded on the weekend with the playing of the triples taking centre stage.
A large contingent of Mona Vale players were there to barrack home the winners Rod Humblestead, Alby Homer and Michael Ashford who took out the major end of the prize money by defeating Peter Doyle, Ross Marshall and Dean Farrell 8-2 in the five end play-off.
Rod and his team have been strong supporters of the Guyra club for many years and their win was fitting although the City boys might not agree. The pair’s winners were the composite team of Richard Latta and Steve Clarke who won the final 6-3 over Mike Pennell and local champion Col Stanley. In the semi-final Latta won 9-4 over Dan Kennedy and Chris Kliendienst and Col won 8-1 against Steve and Todd Fuller. The mixed triples went to the Inverell East combination of Tricia Brooks, Anne Barry and Neil Hawkins with two wins plus 40 from Dennis Williams, Kerry Arandale and Terry Lee on two plus 19. And to round off the winners over the carnival, the ladies’ event on Tuesday was won by Nannette Jemmeson, Miggs Coggan and Jenny Johnson with two wins plus 17 from another City team of Dora Moloney, Dossie O’Connell and Dawn Fuller. Congratulations to Dave, Betty ad their board on another successful carnival and their next event is the Top of the Range fours in January so contact the club for details.

Tod’s bid for title
FOLLOWING up on Todd Fuller’s win in the state champion of champion singles, he will now travel to Taren Point next year to play in the Australian finals. If successful, he will represent Australia in Christchurch, New Zealand in the world titles. Although this is some time away, this should give him plenty of time to think about the importance of his win in Sydney. I know he will be fully committed.

Classic bowls
CLAUDE McFayden recently handed me some old copies of the late Bert Evans weekly bowls report Country Bias and many bowlers will remember this paper. Some of the results should bring back memories to many. In the 4-5 December 1994 issue some results were. Uralla Ladies B Grade Singles Final P. Westbury defeated P. Kliendienst. Ex-Services ladies minor pairs winners were H. McIntyre and M Ravens from G. Watson and D. Davidson. Ex-Services men saw P. Bullen 31 defeat C. Reynolds 21 in handicap singles and V. Bourke and J. McLennan 23 defeated W and J. Widders 18 in minor pairs. At City R. Rodger 31 P. McCann 24 B. Lucas 31 R. Vaughan 14 and W. McFayden and P. Westaway 20 defeated F and D. Beahan 16. Hopefully in the New Year I will be able to report more from Bert’s notes.
Season’s a wrap
AS this will be my last report for this year I would like to thank all who provided me with their club information. I ask that if any club requires news to be included then please contact me as it is very hard to make contact with some clubs. I would like to thank Matt Nicholls for allowing the news to be passed on to bowlers during the year and would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. If you are travelling please take it easy on the roads.
