ARMIDALE Roller Derby League skaters were no match for their coastal rivals in their first home bout at the University of New England on Saturday.
The NED Kennedy’s, made up of skaters from Armidale and Tamworth took on a team from Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Toowoomba, Muswellbrook and Brisbane in what was titled Festivus of the Restofus.
Two of the visiting skaters were “G-Man” and “Numero Uno”, who played for team Australia against New Zealand earlier this year.
Saturday’s bout showcased experienced skaters as well as newcomers, while men of the Armidale Roller Derby League played in the co-ed game.
In a tight match, the NED Kennedy’s went down 179-144.
But with several games already organised for 2014, the team didn’t view it as a loss.
Armidale Roller Derby will have skaters travelling to Queensland this Saturday and there are several games scheduled for early next year, including a round robin competition in Port Macquarie and Thunderbout to be held again in Armidale.
