District finals

New England Bowls By RICHIE CLUTTERBUCK

THE first of the 2014 district championships will be played at Guyra this weekend when that club will host teams from Walcha (1), Ex-Services (2) Guyra (3) and City (4). Two first round matches are set down for 9am. In the first, Guyra’s Scott Campbell will play Walcha’s Kyle Goodwin and Ex-Services Dean Farrell faces former team mate Peter Doyle. The winners will play Justin Bullen and Lindsay McIntyre faces the other winner. In other afternoon matches Todd Fuller plays John McIlwain and Greg Harrison plays Chris Kliendienst. The semi-finals will be played on Sunday morning with the final after lunch. Playing on their home carpet the defending champions Phil Kliendienst, Chris Kliendienst, Col Stanley and Braden Sole will start favourites to retain their title but not without fight as there are several strong combinations to get over.

Triples draws
THE draws are out for the remaining district matches and all clubs should have copies on their noticeboards. The triples are at Glen Innes on 22-23 February. District selectors will soon be calling for nominations from players to contest the zone 3 seniors round robin at Inverell East on 22-23 March and that is not far away. New England are the current holders of the seniors title in the zone and I urge all players 60 years of age and over who are available to put their names forward for selection. Seniors week this year is from 16-23 March and the district will advise on which club is hosting this year’s day.

Taren on fire
AT the Bowls NSW Awards night last week the Taren Point Bowling Club really cleaned up with Wayne Turley and John Green bring named joint winners of the Bowlers of the Year and the club being awarded club of the year. The Grafton club also figured in the honours list after qualifying for State finals in three grades of pennants. Peter Hughes from Engadine was named the senior bowler of the year. Male bowlers are reminded that the journals are not forwarded to your home address now and are available at your club.
