Citizens a cultural mix

DUVAL High graduate Matthew Carey was named Armidale’s Young Citizen of the Year at the city’s Australia Day ceremony on Sunday.
Mr Carey, who has just finished his HSC, has been a role model for his peers in the community.
His deeds were recognised last year when he received the Giyanha Dirrabuu Maurri Award for leadership.
A prefect at Duval, Mr Carey acted as a peer leader for the year 7 students, raised funds for the Jimmy Little Foundation, acted as MC at the school NAIDOC assembly and was president of Duval’s Aboriginal Education Consultative Group.
He was one of many award winners on Sunday.
Dr Amin Amini was recognised for his services to the community for his tireless work in health care.
On the sporting field, hockey star Brittany Parker took out the individual sports award, while Jill Wagner was commended for her performances in the Paint Horse Association of Australia after racking up state and national gongs.
Mountain bike stalwart David Harris was recognised for his contribution to the sport, as were the Armidale Archers.
Long-time member of the Armidale City Band, Ken Peter, won a cultural award for his contribution, while the New England Conservatorium of Music won the cultural organisation award.
