Running towards cancer cure

A GROUP of work collegues at SportUNE have set themselves a double challenge.
On Sunday 2 March they hope to complete the Olympic distance triathlon at Coffs Harbour and in the process raise money and awareness of Cure for Life Foundation, an organisation that researches the causes of brain cancer and fast tracks new treatments.
Cure for Life was founded by neurosurgeon Charlie Teo in 2001, and the foundation hopes to find a cure for brain cancer within the next 10 years.
Gym and group fitness co-ordinator at SportUNE Mally McCormack became aware of the organisation when her nephew Jock Perkins lost his own four-year battle with brain cancer at the tender age of 21 years.
“Jock faced his disease with courage, humour and a determination to beat it. He didn’t lose hope, still looking for a possible cure, which tragically didn’t happen for him,” she said.
“However, the search continues and we hope to raise funds and awareness to support this very worthy cause.”
The group of six participants, forming two teams of three, will swim, cycle and run over 50km to complete the course.
They’ve all been training hard for the event, with a few of the women competing in the Work Place Challenge Triathlon last weekend at The Armidale School as a warm up event.
Dave Harris and his family at Bicycle Central on Marsh has provided competitor Ariane Mazzei with a road bike to participate in the event.
