PROGRESS on a new Emu Crossing Bridge has taken another major step forward as tenders are called to build the new bridge over the Gwydir River at Bundarra.
The new two-lane Emu Crossing Bridge will replace the current one-way crossing, with a higher, longer and wider design so that it can cope with major flooding.
Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall said the State Government had contributed $3.5 million to the new bridge, which will provide improved connectivity for the people and businesses using Thunderbolts Way.
“Thunderbolts Way is the only direct transport route between the towns of Bundarra, Bingara, Warialda and Inverell in the west, connecting them to Armidale and beyond,” he said.
“The current crossing was built in 1919 and is regularly closed during minor flooding, resulting in a 95km detour for road users, so this project will save motorists hours of travel time.”
A compulsory pre-tender meeting will be held at the Uralla Shire Council Chambers on Wednesday, 19 March.
