Treasure of past brought back life

A BOOK detailing Armidale’s early years has been reprinted by the executor of the late author’s estate.
Ian Johnstone has brought award-winning book Colonial Armidale back to life after author John Ferry died in 2004.
Ferry had a PhD in history and taught at the University of New England.
He specialised in local and family history, particularly Aboriginal history.
Colonial Armidale was published by University of Queensland Press in 1999 and in 2000 it won the W. K. Hancock Prize awarded by the Australian Historical Association.
In 2004, Ferry died suddenly from cancer aged 55 years.
Mr Johnstone said the NSW History Council honoured his memory in 2007 with the annual John Ferry Award for local and community historians.
UNE has an annual John Ferry Memorial Lecture, while the university archive still holds his papers.
The book re-launch will be held at UNE Archives on Friday 28 March from 6pm.
Archivist Bill Oates will be the speaker.
Copies of the book can be purchased by calling Ian Johnstone on 6772 3415 or emailing johnstone@bluepin.net.au.
The book is $25 and postage is $10 within Australia.
