WELL the long hot summer is at an end, autumn colour is with us.
It is amazing how in just a few days, some trees suddenly have some autumn tones.
My pin oak has patches of burgundy and the chinese pistachios are transforming into some brilliant oranges and pinks.
At least the water usage will diminish once these long suffering cool climate plants that have gone through a warm climate summer, lose their leaves and have a rest.
Don’t forget you have a great opportunity to see some lovely autumn gardens this weekend with eight gardens open for Gardeners for Farmers and help out our struggling farmers.
There will be plants for sale at garden 5, lunch at garden 8 and lots of raffle prizes plus some other surprises.
Autumn is a great time to look at and buy deciduous trees and shrubs as you can see their individual colour.
Grafted trees are fairly reliable colour-wise as they are vegetative clones but the ones grown from seed vary considerably and some are superior.
When planting these trees, envisage the combination and effects you can create with different autumn colours, as well as the spring and summer foliage and form.
