ARMIDALE Blues coach Alan Jones is hopeful, rather than confident, his side can win back-to-back premierships in the New England Rugby Union competition.
On the eve of the first round, Jones said the Blues had retained most of the side that defeated St Albert’s College in last year’s grand final, while they had also added some key players.
“The goal of any coach is to make the grand final, so we know that while we should be strong again this year, the other sides will be equally as desperate,” he said.
“We have pretty good depth this year, which should help us.”
The Blues get back star number-eight Mike Te Moana, as well as fullback John Roberts.
Armidale kicks off its season against Robb College at Bellevue Oval this Saturday.
Jones said he was expecting a fierce contest.
“We get the jump on them as far as training goes, but we might struggle to match their enthusiasm and hunger,” he said.
Jones is sharing the coaching duties with Anthony McMillan this season.
Meanwhile, in their 10th year, the Barbarians are hoping to win their second premiership in the competition.
The Baa Baas have a new coaching set-up in 2014, with Sam Piddington and Brett Monley co-coaching the first grade side.
The Barbarians were stunned last year when they were upset by Albies in the major semi-final.
Many had tipped the Baa Baas to win the title.
Piddington said they were confident of rectifying that this year.
“We know we missed an opportunity last year and we are keen to make up for it,” he said.
“We think we will have a strong side across the park.”
The Barbarians welcome back Irish fullback Keith Ellis and Scottish big man Morgan Martin, while they also boast a number of other overseas stars, inclushing Welsh backs Rhodri Lewis (wing) and Luke Battensbough (scrum-half).
New Zealander Sam Blatchford is expected to wear the number 10 jersey at fly-half.
