In brief
POLICE were kept busy on the weekend with four premises targeted for break-ins.
Around 5pm Saturday a unit on Beardy Street was left with a damaged front door handle after a failed attempt to break-in.
Alcohol was stolen from the Armidale Jockey Club at 2.10am Saturday after offenders smashed a window before fleeing the scene.
A mobile phone was stolen from a Faulkner Street residence between 4pm Sunday and 5am Monday after the front door was accidentally left unlocked.
A resident in Oliver Avenue was also woken at 11.20pm on Sunday when they heard a loud banging noise. They discovered their front screen door had been damaged.
Inspector Roger Best said police had not made any arrests, but were pursuing leads. Anyone with related information should call Armidale Police Station.
Join tree planting
ARMIDALE Urban Rivercare Group is holding a tree planting event on the north side of Dumaresq Creek between Butler and Markham Streets on Sunday.
Volunteers planted 600 seedlings last month and plan to exceed that number in April.
Anyone interested in lending a hand should bring gloves, wear a hat and sunscreen.
A morning tea and lunch will be provided for a gold coin donation.
Planting will be from 8.30am to 12.30pm.
Wartime history
PROGRESSIVE Cinema will screen Ken Loach’s film The Spirit of ’45 at The Armidale Club later this month.
Just before Anzac Day, the film will look at 1945 as a pivotal year in British history.
The unity that carried Britain through the war allied to the bitter memories of the inter-war years led to a vision of a better society.
Entry is free and donations will go to Green Left Weekly.
Turntables Restaurant will open from 6pm and the film will start at 7.30pm.
