ARMIDALE’S most treasured building was the centre of attention on Saturday night as around 50 people gathered at a private function to celebrate the history of Saumarez Homestead.
This week marked the 30th anniversary of the homestead being handed over to the National Trust of Australia.
The significant heritage building was transferred from F.J. White (Saumarez) Pty Ltd to the National Trust on 7 April, 1984.
National Trust of Australia’s NSW president Ian Carroll said he was delighted the homestead would be preserved for future generations to come.
His address was followed by Graham White, who spoke of his love of the property.
Mr White also donated a mounted golf ball to the National Trust – the same ball that was hit by Mary White down the fairway at the opening of the Armidale Golf Course on 4 August, 1928.
Saumarez will be in the spotlight again this weekend as the property is opened up to the public for the family farm fair.
There will be market stalls, art, craft and activities for everyone to enjoy.
Familes can enjoy guided house tours, which will be half price and run each half hour from 11am to 3pm.
