Young blood bolsters City

New England Bowls By RICHIE CLUTTERBUCK

THE 2013 pennant season is up and running and matches were played at zone level in grades 1 to 6. I do not have all the results at present and will report on most grades next week. In the twos played on an excellent green at Glen Innes, City led the way after winning their three matches. First up they met and defeated Guyra 6-0 on the back of strong performances from all rinks. They then followed this with another 6-0 result, this time against Kootingal, and in the third round it was again City with a 5-1 result. The point score reads City 17, Kootingal 9.5, Guyra 5 and Inverell RSM 4.5. It should be noted that this is unofficial and I will wait to hear from zone match committee chairman Don to verify this. A feature of City’s wins was the performance of the youngsters in the squad who adapted to the situation very well.

Score to settle
IN West Tamworth it looks like it’s between Narrabri and Ex-Services in that section of the threes. Ex-Services lead the way, but I would not discount the Narrabri team as looking at the names on their score sheets they may well pose a big threat to the Ex-Services, which currently remain undefeated with wins against City, Narrabri and Inverell East. The next rounds will be played at Manilla. The only other details I have to hand is the results of the number seven at district level and Ex-Services are off to the zone finals after a 6-0 win against Guyra. Keith Reynolds, Laurie Williams and Ron Pennell skipped their teams to win, however Keith had to recover from 1-14 behind to win. We wish Brian Battersby all the best after he took ill prior to the star of the match.

Sad passing
ON behalf of all bowlers in New England I would like to offer deepest to Peter, Cherrie and David on the sad loss of his wife and their mother Karen Bannon who passed away after a short battle with illness. Karen was a member of the Armidale City Ladies club and her passing will be felt by her many friends both on and off the bowling green. On a slightly brighter note congratulations to our district patron Jack Quick who celebrated his 90th birthday on Sunday. Jack has been a credit to the game of bowls and his input into the game has been appreciated by all. I hope you all have a happy and safe Easter and please remember that if you are travelling then drive safely and obey the rules.
