GJ Gardener Homes director Peter Leotta and his wife Caren are putting their best foot forward for the Cancer Council. The South Tweed-based duo have been hard at work drumming up support and funds for the Cancer Council National Walk to Work Day on Friday, September 16. Caren said that, within the first few hours, they had 12 people on board for the walk, which will start from McDonalds, Tweed Heads South at 7am and travel the 1.2 km to GJ Gardner Homes Tweed Heads where a light breakfast will be provided for all participants. The group now includes not just the GJ Gardener Tweed staff, but also a lot of other local businesses including Good Guys, SEE Civil, TileTrends, The Professionals Coolangatta Tweed, Greenview Developments, Realway Southern Beaches and The Pest Company. “We are asking for a donation of as little as $10 per walker or sponsor,” she said. “Just follow the link to http://www.gofundraise.com.au/page/CarenLeotta and click donate now. “Anyone can join – the more the merrier.” Caren said they had originally set a target of $500 but, with the interest shown, they were hoping to raise even more. Now in its 13th year, the Walk to Work Day is an annual event to raise awareness and funds and effect real change, both in the workplace and to those affected by Cancer. Caren said she and her husband decided to get involve after meeting a representative of the Cancer Council at a Function. “They were looking for sponsor-ship for some work they are doing next year,” she said. “But, while we were on the website looking at that event, we found this.” She said for those who didn’t want to leave their cars at McDonalds all day, there would be lifts available back to their cars. Caren said it was not only a good way to raise money but also promote fitness. Anyone interested in the event should RSVP to Caren on caren.leotta@gjgardener.com.au
