Duranbah’s teacher/librarian and sports co-ordinator Dianne Young is off to experience traditional village life in Papua New Guinea.
It is not everybody’s ideal holiday destination but for Dianne, who trekked the Kokoda Track last vacation, it is the trip of a lifetime.
As a caring mother of four boys who has often supported children less fortunate, Dianne will return to PNG as part of a Kokoda Village Homestay. During her stay she will experience traditional village life in a safe setting at Savaia Village and Koke Village.
The project is an initiative of the Rotary Club of Bendigo.
The Kokoda Track Foundation is an Australian philanthropic organisation which aims to repay the selfless help given to Australia during World War II by the “Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels” of Papua New Guinea, by helping to improve the lives and future of their descendants.
The main assistance is through education and healthcare.
The Foundation’s current projects include providing over 300 scholarships to students in villages along the Kokoda Track, funding educational supplies to 35 schools in the region, supporting the Kokoda Memorial Hospital with medicines and supples, and constructing nurseries to help rebuild village food gardens.
During this visit, Ms Young will be meeting with Dr Genevieve Nelson from the Kokoda Track Foundation to organise volunteering at Savaia School in 2012.
Anyone wishing to help with financial support to provide some of the educational items that Ms Young will be taking with her is asked to contact her at Duranbah School this week.
