Local landmark gets a second chance

It’s a landmark for the people of Chinderah and the Tweed Coast and now the big fig tree next to the Chinderah Hotel is getting a new lease on life.
The tree in Chinderah has been burdened by the weight of its branches.
However the staff at the ‘Chindy’ love the big fig and want to make sure it remains a part of the community for as long as possible, so not only has an expert been engaged to ensure the longevity of the tree, but the staff will collect cuttings to be re-planted around the local area as well.
Advice received from Horticulturalist and Arboricultural Consultant Marian Hammond (M.L.Q./M.Arb.Aus./M.Q.A.A.) states that the risk of a branch breaking is real and very high and represents a significant safety risk to the community and staff of the Chinderah Hotel.
The Taphouse Group will be acting on this advice to maintain the fig tree in an effort to ensure the longevity of the tree and minimise risk to patrons, staff and the wider community.
Representatives of the Taphouse Group have consulted with Council officers in regard to Marian Hammond’s report.  This report has been provided to Council and Councillors have been advised about the plans.
“With our tender loving care we can ensure the big fig remains an important member of the Chinderah community,” Taphouse spokeswoman Janelle Batt said.
“Without this essential maintenance the big fig has a limited life – he’s deteriorating, he’s cracking, he’s rotting and he’s going to fall apart!
“Due to the upcoming storm season and increased risk of extreme weather, this maintenance is a priority for the Taphouse Group.”
