Kingscliff’s newest art school for all ages ‘Kingscliff Arts’ is breaking down beliefs that you need to be talented in order to be able to draw and paint well.
Adults and children attending art classes at the school are living proof that drawing and painting are skills able to be learned by anyone.
Teacher Gillian Groves said if you could hold a pencil you could not only learn how to draw but how to draw well.
“Once you learn the process of what to look for, what materials to use and how to use them, drawing and painting become easy,” she said.
“I have taught everyone from eight year olds to retirees to draw photographic like images, the process is the same.
Students that have just completed Gillian’s Learn To Draw Program have been equally astounded with results that have surpassed all expectations upon joining the weekly classes.
“Before we start the term, each student is asked to draw a picture of an apple with their current skills and knowledge.
“This picture is then put away until the end of the course. At the end of ten weeks the students are asked to redraw their apples with their new skills. On comparing the first and last drawings, the results are nothing short of fantastic and show very clearly how much everyone has learnt in 10 weeks.”
In addition to adult’s drawing classes, Gillian has been teaching children how to draw for many years.
“We are lucky to have a great deal of sporting activities available for children in our community,” she said.
“The art classes offer additional cultural alternatives for children and can provide a strong foundation for future arts practices.”
Gillian’s passion for all things artistic led her to opening the art school in July this year to packed classes.
The school offers a range of creative pursuits for young and old including drawing, painting, animation/manga arts and crafts as well as a range of weekend workshops for those who can’t commit to weekly classes.
New classes start on January 14 and 21. Contact Gillian on
