Juniors head to rugby camp

With temperature tops of 18 degrees during the day, it was perfect rugby weather at the National Rugby Camp at Armidale this week.
Casuarina Beach Junior Rugby Club sent its highest contingent of players ever, with 15 boys from the Casuarina Development Squad making the six hour trip to attend.
The National Camp is a breeding ground for young rugby superstars with coaches from the Australian Rugby Union facilitating the program.
The focus is on developing the players’ skill sets and over the 4 days, the boys work on everything from tackling and scrummaging technique to weights, kicking and sprint programs.
Monday’s program included special guest – NZ Supercoach Steve Dods leading a session. Steve is head of Total Rugby in Christchurch and has coached in Dublin for eight years and Japan for four years. Tuesday night’s special guest is Wallaby Ben Robinson.
The boys stayed at the University of New England dorms and had the experience of being at “rugby boarding school” which is always a thrill.
The Casuarina boys attending ranged in age from U11s – U15s and the coaches sure had their hands full getting the boys to follow instructions re times, places and gear – without their mums.
The camp is all about turning young boys into responsible young men and turning young rugby players into “great” Rugby players!
The camp is just one of the options for the Inaugural Casuarina Rugby Development Squad. The boys will be heading to a training session with the Reds next month. It is important for the boys to get switched on to rugby a little earlier after a five month break.
Player registrations start January 29 and the comp starts March 24. For more info on Casuarina Rugby Club please go to the website www.cbrugby.com.au.
